Baylor University is a private, Baptist-affiliated Research university in Waco, TX, which is the county seat of McLennan County, previously inhabited by a Wichita Native American group, called the `Waco`, from where the city got its name. In the census of 2007, the population of Waco City was estimated at a number of nearly 121 000 inhabitants, more of whom were living in the Metropolitan area, more exactly 224 668.
The university traces its roots back in 1841, when Reverend William Milton Tryon and R.E.B. Baylor, suggested to the Union Baptist Association, to establish a Baptist university in Texas, the suggestion being accepted in the reminded year. Baylor University was officially established in February, 1845, when Republic President Anson Jones signed the decisive Act of Congress.
Over the years, the university grew, being renowned today for its programs in business, music, law, theology, philosophy, and science. According to an article in a 2009 edition of U.S. News & World Report magazine, Baylor University is on the 80th place on the list of 262 national universities, and according to The Princeton Review, the university is among the 371 Best Western Colleges.
The athletic teams which represent Baylor University in various intercollegiate championships are known as the Baylor Bears, the men's sports teams being nicknamed simply the Bears, and the women's sports teams being also known as the Lady Bears. The Baylor Bears participate in the NCAA's Division I, the university being the only private school in the Big 12 Conference. The teams have won 2 NCAA titles: one in 2004, when the men's tennis team defeated UCLA and the other in 2005, when the Baylor Lady Bears basketball team defeated Michigan State.
